Something is nibbling holes in the leaves of this otherwise healthy eggplant, photographed in the Garden RUN community garden in Roxborough on June 11. What is it, and what, if anything, should be done about it?

It’s those doggone tiny black bugs that always go after my eggplant, and noticed on nothing else. I stay organic by using only wood ash on most of my plants. Sometimes, ash on wet leaves burns them and the ash doesn’t survive rain, so it must be renewed often. But it seems to do the job.
Do you purchase wood ash or make your own? Sorry for dumb question, but I never heard of using wood ash before. How do you apply it?
Sorry, reply took so long. I have a neighbor who burns wood for supplementary heat. Any wood ash will do, as far as I know; even from a campfire. The wood ash solution came from a friend who grew up in Calcutta. I apply it as a dusting, using a container with small holes in the bottom, by shaking the container.
If you enlarge the picture you can see what looks to be a flea beetle!!
