The R.U.N. part of the name of this garden stands for Roxborough United Neighbors. The garden is located at 252 Monastery Lane, a block and half south of Manayunk Ave., in the hilly neighborhood above the Schuylkill River mill town of Manayunk. Here is a link to the garden’s web site.
There are about 30 plots in the garden, four of which are set aside for crops grown for the City Harvest food program. The harvest from those plots is taken directly to the Food Cupboard at the Worship Center on Eva Street in Roxborough.
The market, founded in 1999 on city owned land where condemned houses once stood, is supported by the Central Roxborough Civic Association. Not all 30 or so gardeners with plots here live in Roxborough. I, for one, live a six or eight minute drive away in Mt. Airy. But some gardeners live within walking distance.
Most of the plots are in the front section of the garden. The back section is wilder and undeveloped, except for one shady plot in an orchard of fruit trees, and a half dozen or so beehives.
